FLASH-COMP, along with eight key projects from the 4ZDM Cluster and in collaboration with EFFRA, will be gathering in Brussels in March 2025 to deliver the first Digital Manufacturing Workshop to explore the implementation and testing of the new technologies that are transforming European manufacturing. This pivotal event is a must for all those involved in this crucial sector for Europe’s circular, sustainable and green economy.
On 26th March 2025, the Digital Manufacturing Workshop in Brussels will bring together the brightest minds in research, industry, and policy to explore the latest advancements in zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM) and the digital transformation of Europe’s manufacturing industries. As a key member of the 4ZDM Cluster, FLASH-COMP will take centre stage of this EFFRA sponsored event, presenting how its cutting-edge technology has been designed to revolutionise quality control in composite manufacturing and liquid resin infusion (LRI).
At the heart of FLASH-COMP’s mission is the development of AI-driven real-time quality control solutions that optimise LRI production processes and significantly reduce waste. At the workshop, FLASH-COMP’s industrial partner, luxury yacht builder AZIMUT, will present the first outcomes of implementing this breakthrough technology at its Turin factory, which is one of two use cases in the project.
AZIMUT has recently integrated FLASH-COMP’s advanced sensors and decision-support system (DSS), designed to detect and eliminate defects during the liquid resin infusion process used to build its yacht hulls. While the implementation phase is still in its early stages, initial results indicate a promising impact on efficiency and defect reduction. As well as sharing these impacts, AZIMUT will also share insights into the challenges faced during adoption, discussing how it has, along with other FLASH-COMP partners, overcome integration hurdles to ensure seamless operation within its existing manufacturing workflows – See WP7 FLASH-COMP Advances story for more details
A collaborative effort across Europe
FLASH-COMP will be joined by many other projects from the 4ZDM Cluster, including ZDZW, PENELOPE, Turbo, OpenZDM, ENGINE, PlatformZero, and i4Q-AIDEAS. Each of these R&I initiatives is making critical contributions to the evolution of digital manufacturing, and the workshop will serve as a platform for them to showcase their use-case activities, share early results, and discuss strategies for scaling their technologies across the manufacturing sector.
This collaborative approach underscores the importance of cross-sector innovation and knowledge exchange, allowing industry players to benefit from each other’s experiences in testing and implementing digital solutions – as well as sharing that insight with other relevant industry stakeholders involved in delivering new technologies for their own manufacturing processes.
Shaping the future of digital manufacturing
The workshop agenda features a rich lineup of panel discussions, keynote speeches from EFFRA, HaDEA, EIT Manufacturing and industry leaders from Siemens and Volvo, and project showcases, offering insights into the state-of-the-art digital solutions transforming European industry. Topics will include:
- The latest advances in AI, digital twins, and predictive maintenance for zero-defect manufacturing.
- Case studies from leading industrial players, highlighting real-world applications and measurable benefits.
- Policy and funding strategies needed to accelerate the industrial adoption of digital technologies.
Additionally, the event will unveil exclusive test data comparing advanced digital manufacturing techniques with conventional processes, providing compelling evidence of their effectiveness in reducing defects, minimising waste, and improving efficiency.
To ensure that the insights and strategies from the workshop reach the widest possible audience, FLASH-COMP partner Insight Media will produce a comprehensive executive summary of the event. This document will capture the key discussions, emerging trends, and proposed action plans, ensuring that industry and policy stakeholders across Europe can leverage these findings to drive the adoption of next-generation manufacturing technologies.

Filming FLASH-COMP and ZDM in action at Azimut
A new FLASH-COMP film follows three days of industrial testing at the Azimut shipyard in Avigliana, near Turin. It shows the project’s technologies being assembled, tested and used together on a real yacht component under production conditions.

FLASH-COMP: From research to the factory floor at Azimut
FLASH-COMP brings industry, policy and academia together at the Azimut shipyard to examine the project’s journey from research to industrial implementation. The event also confronted a critical question: how can promising research be turned into technology that manufacturers can adopt confidently and at scale?

From validation to demonstration: FLASH-COMP clears the path towards zero defect manufacturing for large-scale composites
Three years after launch, FLASH-COMP has reached a defining moment. The completion and validation of its Physical Test Bed for large composite liquid resin infusion processes confirms pre-industrial integration readiness and opens the door to full industrial demonstration – accelerating the project’s mission to enable the sustainable, zero-defect manufacturing of composite parts.
