The FLASHCOMP project has been named Best Manufacturing Project at the 10th Axians Portugal Digital Awards, a major recognition of excellence in industrial digitalisation and innovation in Portugal – and a real feather in the cap for this EU-funded zero-defects manufacturing initiative.

The award recognises FLASHCOMP’s ambition to transform quality control in liquid resin infusion (LRI) composite manufacturing by embedding digital inspection, real-time monitoring and digital decision support systems directly into production processes.

With much of the technical development led by Portuguese company INEGI, the project demonstrates how advanced manufacturing, data sharing and artificial intelligence can work together to reduce defects and waste while improving efficiency and competitiveness.

At the heart of the solution are rapid inspection and monitoring technologies (FLASH-IM) that capture critical data during pre-forming and infusion. These data feed an digital defect estimation tool (FLASH-DSET), enabling corrective actions in real time, supported by an anticipatory and feedback-driven decision support system (FLASH-DSS). The result is a fully digital and integrated ecosystem that supports a “right-first-time” approach to composite production.

And the project is demonstrating how all this can work on an industrial scale. An advanced demonstration testbed has been set up at the INEGI HQ in Porto, where the different technical solutions from all project partners have been tested and validated, while much of the innovation is now undergoing industrial testing at scale at Azimut Benetti, the project’s use case in Turin, Italy.

This award is an important milestone for the FLASH-COMP consortium, validating both the technical innovation behind the project and its wider contribution to more sustainable and efficient manufacturing in Europe that will drive economic growth. It also highlights Portugal’s growing leadership in applying digital technologies to real industrial challenges.

Congratulations to INEGI and all FLASHCOMP partners on this well-deserved recognition.

FLASH-COMP Physical Test Bed

From validation to demonstration: FLASH-COMP clears the path towards zero defect manufacturing for large-scale composites

Three years after launch, FLASH-COMP has reached a defining moment. The completion and validation of its Physical Test Bed for large composite liquid resin infusion processes confirms pre-industrial integration readiness and opens the door to full industrial demonstration – accelerating the project’s mission to enable the sustainable, zero-defect manufacturing of composite parts.
