The 4ZDM Cluster Workshop, held in Brussels in March, marked a significant milestone for the future of Zero-Defect Manufacturing (ZDM) in Europe. Held immediately after the EFFRA General Assembly, the event was co-coordinated by the FLASH-COMP and ZDZWs project in partnership with EFFRA and the PENELOPE project. More than 100 delegates gathered to discuss cutting-edge approaches to sustainable manufacturing, with industry representatives, researchers and policymakers coming together to explore how digital transformation and ZDM are shaping the future of European manufacturing.

The primary aim of the 4ZDM Cluster is to facilitate collaboration between research initiatives and industry players focused on eliminating defects in manufacturing processes. As the adoption of digital technologies accelerates, the need for ZDM solutions that increase efficiency, minimise waste and improve quality has never been more critical. The Cluster’s biggest event to date provided an invaluable platform to share knowledge, showcase project progress and discuss how to bridge the gap between research outcomes and industrial applications.

The 4ZDM Cluster, including projects like FLASH-COMP, TURBO, Penelope, ZDZW, DataZero, Optimai, OpenZDM, ENGINE, 4iQ, InterZ, with more joining this year, acts as a hub for innovation and cooperation. By bringing together these projects and various EU-funded initiatives and industry, the cluster fosters a unified approach to addressing the challenges of defect reduction and quality control. This is essential in an era where industrial efficiency and sustainability are paramount. The workshop was not just an opportunity to present results but to build stronger networks that can translate research into real-world impact.

Event highlights

The agenda was packed with insightful sessions and presentations. The opening keynotes from HaDEA and EFFRA set the stage, followed by a session on the core principles of ZDM and an introduction to the White Paper outlining future directions for the cluster.

One of the most engaging moments was the panel discussion on the green industrial transition, featuring perspectives from major industry players, including Siemens Gamesa, GRI, Azimut, Wärtsilä, and Aptiv Italy. Moderated by EFFRA Chairman Olaf Pannenbäcker, the panel explored the practical challenges and successes of implementing ZDM, discussing strategies, barriers and the importance of digital transformation in achieving sustainability goals.

In the afternoon, the focus shifted to digital approaches to zero-waste manufacturing, with FLASH-COMP and the other cluster projects sharing their innovative solutions. This session highlighted how advanced digital tools, including simulation, monitoring and automated inspection systems, are transforming defect management in manufacturing.

The final session covered sustainable manufacturing approaches, with presentations on exploitation results, KPIs and the strategic alignment of ZDM with policy initiatives. Sergio Gusmeroli from FLASH-COMP POLIMI offered a valuable perspective on ZDM readiness, while reflections from EIT Manufacturing provided insight into the future direction of digital manufacturing in Europe.

Next steps

After the workshop, it was clear that the momentum behind ZDM is stronger than ever. Insight Media, a key partner in the FLASH-COMP project, is now finalising an executive summary of the event, which will be published by all the participating projects as well as in the next edition of Projects Magazine. This special edition will be distributed at EFFRA’s Manufacturing Days event in October, ensuring that the key takeaways reach a broader audience of stakeholders and decision-makers.
