Lortek, Insight Media and ESTIA attended the European Manufacturing Conference at the end of September, using the opportunity to discuss FLASH-COMP with fellow researchers, policy makers and leading industry decision makers. It was time well spent.
Attending the European Manufacturing Conference in Brussels in September proved to be a valuable opportunity for project coordinator Lortek and partners Insight Media and ESTIA to deliver key massages about the aims and progress of the project and set up interesting connections with those who have a direct interest in implementing FLASH-COMP solutions.
The conference brought together a vibrant mix of researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders, proving invaluable for networking with like-minded professionals from across the manufacturing sector. It enabled discussions about the many practical applications of many novel solutions for boosting industrial efficiency, improving product quality, and reducing costs and we engaged with many key stakeholders who shared FLASH-COMP’s vision for sustainable, digitised production.
One of the major themes of the event was the growing need for Europe to maintain its competitive edge in global manufacturing. Several speakers spoke about ZDM being a vital part of this strategy. By leveraging AI, ZDM has the potential to significantly enhance manufacturing processes, leading to reduced material waste, optimised production lines, and improved product quality and the many industry leaders we spoke to at the event recognised the pressing need for such innovations to drive Europe’s green and digital transitions.
With climate goals and economic competitiveness on the horizon, implementing smart, reliable solutions like those developed in FLASH-COMP will become essential for manufacturing industries looking to remain competitive while meeting environmental targets.
Robust manufacturing
The conference successfully broadened the conversation around key challenges and opportunities in European manufacturing. Discussions were rich and far-reaching, touching on everything from AI and digitisation to the risks of deindustrialisation. Many attendees emphasised the importance of keeping manufacturing industries robust to support Europe’s economic prosperity and social stability.
At the heart of these debates was a sense of urgency to accelerate innovation. There was a palpable recognition that the European manufacturing sector needs faster decision-making processes, more streamlined regulations, and deeper collaboration between public and private sectors. A central question asked repeatedly was: how can Europe harness the power of AI and digitisation to avoid falling behind global competitors?
For the FLASH-COMP partners there, the strong focus on AI at the conference of course resonated deeply with our core mission. AI is the cornerstone of our approach to ZDM, enabling faster and more accurate identification of defects, leading to smarter decision-making on the production floor. Many sessions at the event emphasised AI’s transformative potential across the sector, although there was also recognition of the challenges that come with implementing AI at scale.
Digital uptake
Many manufacturers expressed concerns about the complexity of integrating digital solutions into traditional production lines and the skills gap that exists within the workforce. These discussions underlined the importance of the FLASH-COMP approach, which involves the development of solutions and their implementation strategies with a human-centric vision. This will enable the uptake of the new technologies by existing workers, and also provide new and better jobs for others looking to join the sector in the future. This, it was apparent, will be key to the uptake of FLASH-COMP solutions and something that will be emphasised in the project’s exploitation and business planning, which are now underway.
Another key theme at the conference was the threat of deindustrialisation, which is becoming an increasing concern for Europe’s long-term economic stability. Several speakers highlighted the danger of losing manufacturing capabilities, which could lead to significant job losses and reduced global influence. They stressed that Europe must act swiftly to retain its industrial base, particularly by investing in advanced manufacturing technologies. The entire future of the European Union is at stake is we are not successful with this, said one speaker.
Competitive industry
Again, the relevance of FLASH-COMP and similar projects becomes even more apparent here. Solutions like ZDM not only improve efficiency and reduce waste but also contribute to making European manufacturing more resilient and competitive. By optimising production processes and ensuring higher quality outputs, these innovations help protect Europe’s manufacturing industries from external pressures, keeping them globally competitive while supporting the need for sustainability.
For Insight Media and Lortek, the European Manufacturing Conference was a great success. We strengthened our relationships with both researchers and industrial partners, exploring how FLASH-COMP’s ZDM solutions will help shape the future of manufacturing. The conference made it clear that the sector is at a crossroads: Europe must embrace innovation, digitisation, and AI to remain a leader in global manufacturing.
Our time at the conference reinforced our belief that projects like FLASH-COMP are key to ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future for Europe.
