What is your role within FLASH-COMP?
Within the FLASH-COMP consortium, Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) leads the work aimed at developing and testing a new zero-defect and zero-waste sustainability assessment. Moreover, POLIMI contributes to FLASH-COMP with its expertise on industrial Data Spaces and EU-wide stakeholder network to help manufacturers progress towards Industry 5.0.
How does your work link with other work being done in the project and how are you working with other partners? Can you please update us on your recent activities and work done so far?
During the first months of the project, POLIMI collaborated with the end users at AZIMUT and IAI to define a first set of relevant KPIs that can be used to evaluate the current maturity and performance of liquid-resin-based manufacturing processes and the economic, environmental and social impacts of the implementation of the FLASH-COMP solution. In addition, POLIMI worked with MSI to set the framework of the FLASH-COMP Data Space. A set of reference guidelines and models was outlined to make the FLASH-COMP data-sharing environment aligned to state-of-the-art EU Data Spaces.
In the next period, POLIMI will also lead the work aimed at developing a sustainability assessment method to evaluate the economic, environmental and social impacts brought by the adoption of the FLASH-COMP zero-defect manufacturing approach and decision support system. The assessment method will be tested at AZIMUT’s and IAI’s premises, and lessons learned collected to share good practices with interested stakeholders willing to implement zero-defect and zero-waste manufacturing in future.
How does your work contribute to the overall aims and objectives of FLASH-COMP?
POLIMI’s main contribution to FLASH-COMP is two-fold. On the one hand, POLIMI aims to provide a socio-economic-environmental impact assessment according to zero-defect and Industry 5.0 principles. On the other hand, POLIMI supports the development of the FLASH-COMP Data Space to facilitate secure and sovereign data sharing for value creation.
What do you hope to achieve through your participation in FLASH-COMP?
Thanks to FLASH-COMP, we can build new relationships and expand our network of European partners. We can also get new knowledge on liquid-resin-based manufacturing processes, as well as create a sustainability assessment to foster zero-defect and zero-waste manufacturing among EU stakeholders.
Is there anything else you would like to say about the project so far?
In our opinion, FLASH-COMP is a great opportunity for the European industry to develop and experiment with new ways to achieve a zero-defect, more sustainable and human-centric composite production enabled by digital and data-based solutions.

From validation to demonstration: FLASH-COMP clears the path towards zero defect manufacturing for large-scale composites
Three years after launch, FLASH-COMP has reached a defining moment. The completion and validation of its Physical Test Bed for large composite liquid resin infusion processes confirms pre-industrial integration readiness and opens the door to full industrial demonstration – accelerating the project’s mission to enable the sustainable, zero-defect manufacturing of composite parts.
